How to redeem a promo code at a SaaS checkout

Most software tools accept promo codes, but the field is rarely in the same place twice. Sometimes it is on the checkout page, sometimes in account billing settings, and sometimes it only works on a specific plan or billing period. This guide shows where to look, how to apply a code, and what to confirm before you enter payment details, so you know the discount actually applied.

What you need before you start

  • The exact code, copied from the original source. Codes are often case sensitive, and copy-paste avoids typos.
  • The terms that came with the code: which plan, monthly or annual billing, new or existing customers, and the end date.
  • An account on the tool, ideally created with the email address the offer was sent to if it is tied to an invitation.
  • A note of the normal price, so you can tell if the discount was applied.

Find the promo code field

The field goes by many names: promo code, coupon, discount code, voucher, or redeem code. Look for a small link rather than a box. It is often collapsed under text such as Add promotion code or Have a coupon?

  1. Start the upgrade from inside the product, usually via Upgrade, Plans or Pricing in the account menu.
  2. Choose the plan and billing period the code is meant for before looking for the field. Some checkouts only show a valid discount for the matching plan.
  3. On the checkout page, look near the order summary or under the subtotal for a promotion code link.
  4. If there is no field at checkout, open account settings and look for Billing, Subscription or Plan. Some tools put a Redeem or Apply code option there.
  5. If you still cannot find it, search the tool's help center for coupon or promo code. Some offers are applied only through a special signup link or by support.

Apply the code

  1. Paste the code into the field without extra spaces before or after it.
  2. Select Apply and wait for the order summary to refresh.
  3. Read any error message. Common ones mean the code expired, does not match the plan, or has already been used on the account.
  4. If it fails, try the other billing period or plan named in the offer, then check the terms again before contacting support.

Apply the code before you enter card details. If the discount does not show, you can stop without committing to a full-price plan.

What to check before you pay

A code that says Applied is not always the discount you expected. Read the order summary line by line before you confirm.

  1. Check the discount line. It should name the code and show the amount or percentage taken off.
  2. Check the duration. Look for wording such as first month only, first 3 months, or forever. Many codes only cover the first billing period.
  3. Check the price after the discount ends. The summary or terms usually show what you will pay at renewal.
  4. Check the billing period. Make sure you have not been switched to annual billing when you meant monthly, or the other way round.
  5. Check seats and add-ons. Discounts often apply to the base plan only, not extra seats, usage or add-ons.
  6. Check taxes and currency. The final total may include sales tax or VAT, and the code's value may be set in a different currency.
  7. Check the cancellation terms, especially if the code starts a free trial that converts to a paid plan.

After you pay

  • Save the receipt or invoice and confirm the discount appears on it.
  • Open the billing page in your account and check the next charge date and amount.
  • Add a calendar reminder a few days before the discount ends so you can decide whether to keep the plan.
  • If the discount is missing from the invoice, contact the vendor's support with the code, the date and a screenshot of the checkout page. It is easier to fix before the next billing cycle.

When a code will not work

Most failures have a simple cause. Codes are often limited to new customers, a single redemption per account, specific countries, or a fixed end date. Some are tied to a partner signup link and only work if your account was created through it. Others work only through the vendor's website, not through an app store purchase, where the app store handles billing.

If you believe the code should work, contact the vendor rather than the site that listed it, because only the vendor can see why it was rejected. Be prepared to share where you found the code.
