How to verify student status for software discounts

Many developer and AI tools offer free or discounted plans to students, but each one needs proof that you are currently enrolled. Most use one of three methods: GitHub Education, a third-party verification service such as SheerID, or a check of your school email address. This guide explains each method and what to prepare so your verification goes through the first time. Each provider makes its own decision, so a verified status in one place does not guarantee access elsewhere.

What you need before you start

  • Access to your school email inbox, if your school issues one.
  • A clear document that proves current enrollment: a school ID showing a current enrollment date, a class schedule, a transcript showing current classes, or an enrollment verification letter.
  • Your full name exactly as it appears on that document.
  • The official name of your school and its website address.
  • A phone or laptop camera for photographing documents, if the service asks for a photo.

Before uploading a document, cover sensitive details that the reviewer does not need, such as ID numbers or financial information, while keeping your name, school and dates visible.

Verify with GitHub Education

GitHub's student program requires you to be at least 13, enrolled in a degree or diploma granting course (including high school and homeschool), and to have a personal GitHub account.

  • If your school does not issue email addresses, GitHub asks for official documentation of that policy, such as a school webpage or a letter on school letterhead.
  • If your school's email domain is not recognized, contact GitHub Education Support with the school's full name, website and the domain you are using.
  1. If the application will ask for an academic email, add it to your GitHub account and verify it first.
  2. Go to the Education benefits page in your GitHub settings.
  3. Under GitHub Education, click Start an application.
  4. Complete the form and upload proof of current student status when asked.
  5. Click Submit application.
  6. Once approved, open the GitHub Education portal to use your benefits.

Verify with SheerID

SheerID runs student verification for many software brands. You usually reach it from the brand's student discount page rather than going to SheerID directly. It first tries an instant check against official data sources. If that fails, it asks you to upload a document for review.

  1. Open the student offer from the software company's own site.
  2. Enter your name, date of birth, school and email as requested. Type your name exactly as it appears on your school records.
  3. Submit the form and wait for the instant result.
  4. If asked for a document, upload one that shows your full name, your school's name and a date showing current enrollment. Acceptance letters for future terms are generally not accepted.
  5. Watch for an email with the result. Upload links can expire after several days, so complete the step promptly.

Verify with a school email

  1. Sign up or open the student offer page using your school email address.
  2. Open the confirmation email in your school inbox and click the link.
  3. Return to the product and check that the student plan or discount now shows in your billing or plan settings.
  4. If your school email will expire after graduation, change the account's login email to a personal address if the product allows it, while keeping the verified status.

Common reasons verification fails

  • The name on the form does not match the document.
  • The document shows no current date, or only a print date.
  • The photo is blurry, cropped or missing the school name.
  • The school email domain is not on the provider's list.
  • You applied from an account that already used the same offer.

If you are rejected or need to reverify

  1. Read the rejection message carefully. It usually names the reason, such as an unreadable document or a name mismatch.
  2. Fix that one issue. For example, take a new photo in good light, or choose a document with a current term date.
  3. Reapply through the same route. For GitHub, return to the Education benefits page in your settings. For SheerID, restart from the brand's student offer page.
  4. If you think the decision is wrong, contact the support channel for that verification method, not the software brand's sales team.
  5. Keep a copy of your accepted document in a safe place. Many offers ask you to verify again each year or each term.

Use the same name format everywhere: on your GitHub profile, on verification forms and on any software accounts. Small differences, such as a missing middle name, are a common cause of manual review.
