How to switch plans without losing a discount

Discounts are usually attached to a specific plan, billing period or subscription, not to you as a person. That means a simple change, like moving from monthly to annual billing or upgrading a tier, can quietly remove a promo price or a founding rate. This guide shows how to check your discount's terms and change plans without losing it.

What you need before you start

  • The original offer terms: the email, checkout page or promo code page you used.
  • A screenshot of your current billing page showing the plan, price and any discount line.
  • Your next renewal date.
  • A clear idea of what you want to change: tier, number of seats, or billing period.

Understand how discounts are attached

  • Percentage-off codes often apply for a fixed number of months, and only to the plan you bought.
  • Annual-plan discounts are usually built into the annual price. Switching to monthly removes them.
  • Founding or grandfathered prices are often tied to staying on the same plan with no break in the subscription. Cancelling and resubscribing usually loses them.
  • Credit-based promos, like a dollar amount of usage, often stay in your account after a plan change but keep their original expiry date.
  • Some providers apply a new promo code only to new subscriptions, not to changes to an existing one.

If the terms say 'for the first X months', the discount usually ends at that point no matter which plan you are on.

Check before you switch

  1. Open your billing page and find the discount line. Note its name and end date if shown.
  2. Re-read the offer terms for phrases like 'applies to', 'new customers', 'annual plans only' or 'while subscribed'.
  3. Look at the provider's help center for an article on changing plans or proration.
  4. Start the plan change but stop at the confirmation screen. Most providers show the new price and whether the discount is still applied before you confirm.
  5. If the preview does not show the discount, cancel the change and contact support before going further.

Monthly versus annual

Moving from monthly to annual usually saves money, but it can replace a promo with the standard annual price. Moving from annual to monthly usually takes effect at the end of your annual term, and you lose the annual rate.

  1. Compare the total cost for twelve months on your current discounted monthly plan with the annual price.
  2. Check whether your promo continues after the switch, using the preview screen.
  3. If you are moving to annual, ask support whether they can apply your existing discount to the annual price. Many will for long-standing customers.
  4. If you are moving to monthly, wait until close to your annual renewal date so you use the full year you paid for.

Upgrades and downgrades

  1. For upgrades, check whether the provider prorates. You may be charged the difference immediately, sometimes at full price.
  2. Ask support in writing whether your discount carries over to the higher tier before upgrading.
  3. For downgrades, check whether the change happens immediately or at renewal, and whether unused credits are lost.
  4. Avoid cancelling to downgrade. Use the plan change option instead so your subscription and discount stay continuous.
  5. After any change, check your next invoice and compare it with the screenshot you took before.

If you hold a founding price, such as PerkRadar Premium's founding rate, keep the subscription active. Founding prices are usually kept only while you stay subscribed.

If you lose the discount anyway

  • Contact support quickly, with your screenshots and the original offer terms. Errors are easier to fix within the same billing cycle.
  • Ask whether the change can be reversed and the original plan restored.
  • Check PerkRadar's promo code list for a current code that applies to the new plan.
  • Keep a short record of every plan change and the price before and after, so you have a clear timeline if you need to dispute a charge.
  • If the provider will not restore the discount, decide whether the new plan is still worth it at full price, and switch back before the next renewal if not.

Write to support from the email address on the account. Requests from the account owner are handled faster and leave a record.
